Adopting Design Thinking to Hack the Refugee Crisis

Adopting Design Thinking to Hack the Refugee Crisis

In collaboration with Hack Summit Labs and HIAS—a nonprofit organization that provides humanitarian assistance to refugees—Refugee Hack Summit brought together teams of designers, creatives, and engineers from Spotify and eleven other NYC tech companies to focus on three key challenges for refugee communities: employment, credit, and the distribution of donated goods.

Participants were broken into teams that focused on one of the three key challenges. Alongside HIAS staff, teams then met with refugees living in New York to get first-hand insights into their experience. At the end of the event, teams presented their ideas for change.

Refugee Hack Summit equipped us to work with HIAS to develop some high-impact innovation strategies that will help them sustainably serve the refugee community in a complex world that's constantly changing.
